On December 2, 1865, Arthur Joachim von Oettingen, professor of physics at the University of Tartu, began weather observations at his home. This marked the beginning of continuous meteorological measurements in Tartu, which continue to this day. The year 2025 will mark 160 years of organized and uninterrupted weather data collection and analysis in Estonia. To celebrate this, a series of events called METOBS 160 – 160 Years of Weather Measurement Interpretation will be held, highlighting the history, present and future of weather and climate science.
